A Snippet of Broadway Market Life

Broadway Market, Hackney, London

London is a wonderful place to watch. To witness life happening and to see others watching you. Today I sat and watched a man walk past looking at his phone laughing, "I wish the bitch would die and go to hell and let me drink". I watched a man stick his hand out to a woman's dog as she held it and wrote and he let that dog lick his hand for two minutes without saying a word to the owner. I watched as an old woman who could not talk but only moan, walked up to all the smokers in the street and grunted pointing to her mouth (some offered her a cigarette, some did not, she was indifferent either way). And I watched another old lady with a loud Scottish accent sit down and intrude on two young men's conversation - "I am not a comedian - I am an artist," she said seriously. She left the two men, went in the betting shop and returned to them with a betting slip in her hand which had a crude drawing of a ladies face and "£1,000,000,000" drawn largely over it. She was not happy to find a new young, attractive woman in her place. "You leave for one minute and some bitch takes your place!"

All this was on my right and on my left, two middle class women had babies strapped to their chest and discussed their friend's new housing purchase in Belgravia.
